Description
Sumi-e is the Japanese word for black ink painting. With these paintings, the emphasis is placed on the beauty of each individual stroke of the brush, and often viewed as “painting a poem”. The Sumi-e paintings are created with the Four Treasures – the ink stick, ink stone, paper or silk, and the brush. The ink stick is not like your traditional ink; it’s made from collecting the soot from inside the kilns and then mixed with glue and pressed into a stick. It becomes liquid ink by grinding the stick into the ink stone with some water.
When this rich charcoal colorway came out of the dye pot, Sumi-e paintings were the first thing I thought of! It is a wonderful tonal color with lots of depth to it. It has a few splashes of stormy gray throughout, marking it as a definite tonal colorway versus an actual solid black. This is a darker black/gray than Iron Filigree. Please note if a color is listed as a ‘backorder’ option, it will be dyed to order and may take up to a week to ship.
Please note that color variations may occur from skein to skein as a result of hand dyeing. I have matched the colors in the photo as close as real life as possible however some differences may be noticed from monitor to monitor. Please also order as many skeins as you need for your project as color variation may happen one dye lot to the next.
